Why is the only diet soda offered at most restaurants a diet cola?
October 17th, 2009 | by admin |It seems that with people trying to be weight conscious (not to mention diabetics) that there would be a greater choice of diet sodas at many restaurants, but my experience is rather the opposite. Even if colas are the most popular form of soda, I would think that there would be enough people who would drink a diet lemon/lime or diet orange soda to make it worth having on hand, but then maybe I’m wrong. In my case, generally the restaurant simply loses out because I drink water instead of ordering a soda. (I hate colas!)
They do have diet drinks like ice tea, water, tonic, and diet coke. Its not profitable for vendors to have say diet sprite because it does have shelf life and it doesn’t self very much! How it works is they only come as syrup in a box and a hose is connected to it where it adds the carbonated water. So you need a new hose and and button on the machne just for a new item. Unfortunitly its now what people what its what makes the most money.

From my experience supervising an AMC theatre, diet sodas just don’t sell as much as regular sodas do. It isn’t profitable to the vendor to stock items that don’t move fast enough. There’s only enough space on a soda fountain for a decent choice of sodas. And if you wanted to sell the fastest selling diet soda, you would sell the cola as well.
